When a storm hits, it's too late to make sure your home is storm proof. Here are some tips to make sure your home is ready for whatever Mother Nature may bring your way.

Remove branches

When fueled by storm winds, even the most unassuming branches can cause significant damage so it is imperative to cut away any branches that are touching or may threaten to fall on your house.

Also remove any dead trees that could be displaced during a storm. Dangerous winds can cause branches or trees to pull up roofing materials or create entry points for water in your roof or home.

Clean your gutters and downspouts

One simple task that makes a huge difference in your homes’ storm readiness is cleaning your gutters and downspouts. Your gutters perform the essential function of transporting rainwater away from your foundation and basement. We recommend clearing your gutters of any leaves, dirt, twigs or debris that has accumulated at least twice a year.

Also check for any spots that may cause leakage and use a sealant like Red Devil’s StormGuard-920 to make sure that your gutters are reinforced and the rainwater is effectively being channeled away from your home. If you don’t address this, water could overflow, damaging your ceilings, basement and/or foundation.

Examine electrical wiring

We all know that water and electricity do not mix, so it is important to check to make sure that there is not any exposed wiring in your home. To prevent any electrical issues, also look for any loose wiring, and light bulbs or electrical fixtures exposed to the open. Also make sure there is no way for water to accumulate in the switchboards or junction boxes.

Check the basement for signs of leakage or water entry points

Have your basement checked for any areas that may allow for the entry of water. If needed, have your basement professionally sealed. For small gaps, use a sealant like Red Devil’s StormGuard-920. We also recommend positioning sandbags along the walls to address any seepage that may occur.

Put shutters or screens on your windows

Shutters and screens are a great way to add another layer of protection for your windows against the effects of a storm. If you do not have them, consider purchasing screens and shutters designed for storm protection. Make sure you know how to install and lock them before a storm is on the way.

Check your roof regularly

Checking your roof regularly is a no-brainer for storm proofing your house. Your roof is your home’s first line of defense against rain and the elements. Help it to protect you more effectively by having it checked at least twice a year. Look closely for any damage that may have occurred, like broken or missing shingles, corrosion, cracks or gaps, lose fittings or any other problems. Also check the metal flashings on your roof to make sure it hasn’t rusted or cracked. Replace any missing shingles and use Red Devil’s PU-970 Polyurethane Blacktop & Roof to seal any roof or flashing cracks.

Seal cracks (ceilings, walls, windows and doors)

Cracks along the edges of your ceilings, walls, windows and doors have the ability to let in water and pests. Before the storms set in, make sure your home is sealed properly to prevent any seepage. Depending on their size, cracks can be filled either with a sealant, like Red Devil's StormGuard-920, or a spackle like Red Devil’s Onetime Lightweight Spackling. Not addressing cracks could lead to flooding, mold or mildew.

Pro tip

To reduce moisture in the rooms with lots of clothes, shoes or fabric furniture- keep charcoal. Charcoal will absorb the moisture in the air and help to keep your shoes and fabrics dry.

Check for termite-damaged wood

Look to make sure your home does not have any termite-damaged wood. Water can enter the termite tunnels and cause wood to rot from the inside. Be sure to replace all affected wood to secure your home.

Inspect the house siding

Check to make sure that there are no leaks, cracks or holes. For leaks, use a durable sealant like Red Devil's StormGuard-920. Also if any parts of your exterior is made with wood, make sure the paint is in good condition. If it isn’t, you may want to consider painting your home before the winter weather really sets in

Adjust the water levels in your swimming pool

If you have a swimming pool, don’t forget to reduce the water level to prevent any flooding from rainwater accumulation.

Be sure to clear and put away any garden or patio furniture that may be displaced during a storm. Secure any furniture you prefer to leave outside.
